Traditional ways of selling and purchasing are done in stores, malls, grocery stores, wholesale and retail stores, bookstores, record stores, restaurants and anywhere there is physical visibility. With internet, credit card and accessible freight flights, purchasing can even be online and television. One could simply click one product among others to virtual cart, type-in the credit card number and wait for the product on the doorstep for days without service assistants. One could also purchase from the television but with a telemarketer on a phone, not with a television remote control. Unlike the power of the mouse of an online purchaser, remote control of the television viewer cannot purchase products.

This premise moved TiVo to explore to expand functions of remote control from merely changing channels but purchase advertised and promoted products on television.

So, they partnered with Amazon.com again after the set-top boxes for the Amazon Video on Demand deal.
The joint venture will develop television onscreen menus for advertised and promoted products. Viewers will select and buy products with their remote control in the menus, which will appear throughout the television viewing.

Unlike traditional television purchases through telemarketers and like online purchases, TiVo and Amazon.com will personally “engage” viewers to buy—or have more control on buying on television. It will also pioneer a more interactive television ad purchase.
With TiVo, viewers will not merely record television programs in set-top boxes but purchases in Amazon.com account. Recordings will either give viewers chances to watch the television program they missed during purchases or other off-television activities.

TiVo users may still be too few but their joint venture with Amazon.com is creating a new market for controlled purchases on television. Besides, almost all prefer to buy things personally without service assistants, who often are irritating. Hail to TiVo and Amazon.com! More self-service technologies are gaining more grounds.
