Ok, first of all let me warn you that google will absolutly try to hire hitmen and kill you if they catch you doing this. So, you have been warned.

Lets pretend that you are spending a hypothetical $500 a day in the content network.

The pareto principle is going to apply to your traffic. The vast majority of your very best traffic is going to be coming from a few sites. FIND THOSE SITES.

Once you have found those sites, nicely approach the owner. Here is the deal, lets say your spending $150 of your $500 a day on my site to advertise. Well, I'm certainly not getting $150 a day, Google is probably giving me $60 to $80 a day. You see where this is going right?

What if you offerd me say, $125 a day to put a BANNER on my site - or just to run the little google type ad all day? Do you think Id say yes? I bet I would. Not only that, but now your on my site ALL THE TIME, not just every now and then. Your probably going to double or triple the amount of traffic you get from me, and you cut your cost too boot. Not a bad deal.

First off, I want to thank you Brian for all the valuable information you have delivered that I have been consuming throughout this forum.

In another thread of yours, I asked you for some advice about what I could do to get off on the right foot. You said I should either offer to help others or share some knowledge.

I want to share some knowledge on this subject because the content network is my claim to success in internet marketing.

What Brian is talking about is reading your placement reports or using placement targeting to find out what sites are giving you the best quality traffic.

The trick is knowing which ones convert the best. You have to be able to track your advertising and do a lot of testing.

I call it Placement Research and here is how I do it:

1. The first thing I do is keyword research. For content network though, I don't necessarily use the exact keywords of the particular product or service. I do demographics keyword research to find out where my target market likes to hang out online. Since banner advertising is more like interruption marketing, I have found this technique to be very effective because I am interrupting my target market with a very specific product or service that is highly relevant to them.

2. I create a keyword list of all the broad match terms that I find that are related to my target market. In the content network, you don't need to use phrase match or exact match, but long tail keywords are also good to use.

3. I use a tool like Adsense Finder or software to search Google for sites to place my ads on. This tool will find sites that have adsense ads based on the keywords you use. This is particularly important because you can then scope out these sites to make sure they are quality sites. You can use sites like Alexa or Quantcast to get a really good idea about the quality of the site.

4. In adwords, I setup 3 content network only campaigns with banners ads and text ads separated into different adgroups. In campaign 1, I use only the placements that I found while searching for sites related to the keyword list I created. In campaign number 2, I setup a campaign with only the keywords from my list. Be sure to never use over 20 keywords per adgroup. I usually stick to ten or less and I try to group related terms together to create a tightly themed adgroup. In campaign 3, I use both keywords and placements.

5. I track my results and monitor the placement reports I generate on a regular basis. Another note is that you should give your campaigns a fair enough time to make an informed decision of what to do next.

Once you have determined the sites you want to go to directly, you will know exactly how to negotiate a price you are willing to pay because you can use your stats and your revenue information to determine the most you are willing to pay. I then take that price and discount it at least 50% to have a number on the low end to begin your bargaining. Never pay over the price you set that is the high number. Remember, you can always just continue to use Google if that is working. However, I have yet to find an advertiser that I could not strike a deal with because they would rather have the money I am going to pay them compared to the peanuts they receive from Google.

Last but not least, I am sharing this knowledge because this is something that I know very well. I came to this forum to find jv partners because I have a product in which I teach my entire content network strategy. I was finding it very difficult to add value to this community because I know absolutely nothing about joint ventures because I am new to the product side. I have been doing PPC with affiliate marketing so I never took the time to learn this stuff.

I hope whoever reads this information will find some value in it.

Hey thanks Brandon! I may not can provide as much value as you about the jv stuff, but now I feel like I do have something to offer.

By the way, I read your post about having cancer and all and now I see we both have faced some similar circumstances. Although I have never had cancer, I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure two years ago and I almost died. I struggled for months to get back to normal and my health is still a major concern. The doctors also told me (actually they told my wife) I wasn't going to make it, but I pulled through and now I am defying all the odds because I feel great now and enjoying life. My cardiologist calls me his "miracle patient" because of how well I have bounced back.

Keeping doing what you are doing and I will be following you to consume some of the killer tactics that you share. Maybe one day we can work together. :)

Very helpful advice, but in my experience, the best results come from the search ads rather than content network...maybe I need to search the content sites beforehand like you adviced, and then rinse and repeat.... I pray both of you have good health and long life :)

I find that more traffic is available in the search network, but my ROI is at least twice as high in the content network vs the search network, and that's before I got out and play let's make a deal.

There is a very specific way to do ads in the content network, and if you do them that way you'll kill it.

As far as your results being better in the search network, it is probably because you try to approach the content network with the same strategy and that is the biggest mistake because they are two completely different animals.

Reason 1:

Your ads on the search network are triggered at the keyword level, which means that your keywords, ad copy, and landing pages all have to be parallel and relevant to get a high quality score which equals lower costs per click, high ad placement, more impressions, automatic matching, etc.

However on the content network, your ads are triggered at the adgroup level, which means Google themes your adgroups based on the keywords within each adgroup and delivers them to the places they feel are most relevant within their content network. Also quality score is not a very big deal on the content network like it is on search.

Reason 2:

There is this thing called placement targeting that you don't get with the search network, which is the secret to really taking advantage of the content network. You have the ability to place your highly relevant offer in front of a very highly targeted group of people. It doesn't get any better than that!

Reason 3:

Content network advertising is like interruption marketing, which means you are actually trying interrupt someone while they are trying to do something else. The are not currently seeking what you have to offer. But if it is relevant to them and sounds like an incredible deal to spark their curiosity after you turn their attention away from what they are doing, they will click through to your ad.

Once they click through, then you have a totally different beast in converting them because you have to practically offer them something that is a no brainer because remember, they were not looking for what you have to offer. Conversion tactics are also a totally different science, which is also key regardless of any type of advertising you are doing.

The search network is much different because people are actively searching for whatever you may be offering which makes them more likely to be in a buyer's mode because they are looking for something specific.

I always tell people I consult with and my friends that each network has its own science. There are very stark contrasts to strategy from one to the next and many people don't understand this so they think the content network is a waste.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

Actually Brandon, there is waaaay more traffic to be had on the content network. There are literally millions and millions of websites and publishers on the content network.

Also, Google only controls 30% of the overall traffic on the internet. The figure most people quote is that Google controls 60-70% of internet search. This is a very true statement, but the majority of traffic funnels do not start with search engines. If you are only talking about search traffic, then Google is King. If you talk about overall Internet traffic, they still own the lion's share with 30%, but is still another 70% of traffic out there for the pickings.

Why do you think adult sites and porn sites dominate the top 100. They have a killer traffic funnel that is not matched anywhere. This is why links are so important. Most sites get the majority of their traffic from backlinks.

The reason most people believe there is more traffic on the search network is because they don't understand how the content network works.

One other note, if you check out the major players in the advertising industry you will find that they all buy traffic using media buys. The reason is because there is more traffic to be had. That is why you can straight kill the content network by cutting Google out of the picture by going directly to the source.

Yeah, there is a tool called Adsense finder (which is free). Just Google it because I don't have the link handy. Go there and then you have to signup to their mailing list to be able to download it.

Once you download it, you can simply put in the keywords you want to target and the tool will go out and get sites that are relevant to your keywords that accept Google Adsense.
